Shoes And Socks

RULE NO. ONE — ALWAYS WEAR SHOES
RULE NUMBER TWO: ALWAYS WEAR SHOES THAT FIT WELL

As many as half the foot problems that lead to amputations are caused by POORLY FITTING SHOES.

Since the size and shape of your feet can change over time IT'S IMPORTANT TO HAVE YOUR FEET MEASURED EVERY TIME YOU BUY NEW SHOES.

The American Podiatric Medical Association states "NEW SHOES SHOULD BE COMFORTABLE AT THE TIME THEY'RE PURCHASED AND SHOULD NOT REQUIRE A BREAK-IN PERIOD, though it is a good idea to wear them for short periods of time at first.

Shoes should have leather or canvas uppers, fit both the LENGTH AND WIDTH OF THE FOOT, be cushioned and sturdy AND LEAVE ROOM FOR TOES TO WIGGLE FREELY.

SOCKS For people with diabetes protecting your feet from injury IS A MUST. One easy, inexpensive way to protect your feet is to WEAR THE RIGHT SOCKS. Here are some things to think about when selecting socks:
FIRST AND FOREMOST, STAY AWAY FROM SEAMS. Sock seams can put pressure on your foot and, over time, a pressure ulcer can develop. A PRESSURE ULCER IS CAUSED BY UNRELIEVED PRESSURE ON THE FOOT THAT DAMAGES THE SKIN AND UNDERLYING TISSUE.
Seams aren't the only problem SOCKS WITH RIBS CAN ALSO CAUSE TOO MUCH PRESSURE. If you see indentations on your legs after you take your socks off, THEY'RE PROBABLY TOO TIGHT.
Since diabetes can cause blood circulation problems, DON'T WEAR SOCKS WITH TIGHT ELASTIC AROUND THE TOP.
Wear well-padded socks that are a half inch longer than your longest toe. THICK SOCKS CAN DECREASE PRESSURE ON THE FOOT BY UP TO 30 PERCENT.
If you have nerve damage (neuropathy), IT'S A GOOD IDEA TO WEAR WHITE SOCKS. That way you can easily see if you have a bleeding cut or sore on your foot.
COTTON SOCKS MAY NOT BE YOUR BEST BET. When cotton gets wet, it stays wet, which can lead to fungal infections, blisters and other irritations. INSTEAD CHOOSE SOCKS MADE OF SYNTHETIC MATERIALS LIKE ACRYLIC, POLYESTER OR NYLON which takes moisture away from the skin.

TAKE A CLOSE LOOK EVERY DAY -- A daily inspection is one of the most important things you can do for your feet. CHOOSE A TIME EACH DAY TO EXAMINE YOUR FEET FOR SORES, CUTS, COLOR CHANGES, SWELLING OR INFECTED TOENAILS. If you have trouble bending over to reach your feet .... use a mirror to inspect them or ask someone to examine your feet for you. MAKE DAILY FOOT CARE A PRIORITY.
