Avoiding Athlete's Foot

by Stephen M. Pribut, D.P.M.

Moisture is one of the major contributing factors in the development of athlete's foot. A dark, warm, moist environment is the perfect fungal heaven.

If you have had repeated bouts of athlete's foot, you take steps to lessen the amount of moisture on your feet. The battle on athlete's foot begins with trying to keep your feet dry. You may use anti-perspirant products designed for feet, absorbant powder, and socks that wick moisture away from the foot. These special socks, which are made primarily of synthetic fibers are especially important for endurance sports events such as marathon running.

If what seems to be athlete's foot does not readily clear up, you should visit a podiatrist's office for further evaluation and treatment.

See our other on-line material about "socks".
